Comm Studio Metaphor Poster 2009 2nd Semester

These images probably make up only about a third of the process work that was created. At the time, it seemed like too much work to handle, but the more process work we had, the better we understood our content. It helped us to interpret our books from all angles. It was worth it.

We were supposed to read a book and create a hypothetical book reading poster. The book I chose was "The Picture of Dorian Gray" by Oscar Wilde.
I thought about a crow tessellation

A preliminary sketch but ha ha ha it looks so awful.

This was fun. Mysssteeeriousss.

I used some old horror film posters as references.

This was the painting I worked on before I scanned it in and worked on the rest in photoshop.

I decided that the reading would be done by the great and late Vincent Price at Angelo's and Vinci's Ristorante at 5:00 to 7:00 PM.

JT Steiny's Illustrated Book Class 2009 continued

Final images for the book

These are the final paintings before I scanned them in and cleaned up the background on photoshop

The couch painting is my favorite. I had a lot of fun making up designs for the couch and the clothing.

I scanned the colored pencil sketches and printed them black and white onto cardstock paper. Then I outlined the images with sepia ink and painted them with watercolor.

I exhibited my original paintings in frames and the books at Meltdown Comics at the end of the year.

I have all these paintings framed as well as a 24" x 36" poster of the couch image. If anyone is interested in purchasing any of these, please let me know. If you would like a copy of the book, I can always print more, so please let me know of that as well.

JT Steiny's Illustrated Book Class 2009

Steiny is great. In his class I got to make up some new characters and place them in different situations in a book. These are all of the preliminary sketches.

The title: "Sausages in Your Pocket And Other Nonsensical Advice"
"Sausages in your breast pocket make the perfect snack on a busy day."
"Fill rocks into your pockets to keep from blowing away on windy days."
"The higher the puddles, the higher your pants should be."
"If you do not like the clothing styles today, make your own fashion statement."
"Rock in Snowball = Maximum Efficiency"
"Gas is Fuel."
"If Someone finds food on your face, tell her you are saving it for later."
"If you can't see them, they can't see you."
"Garbage bags make excellent parachutes."

Drawing and Painting Projects and Sketches 2009

What makes you mad/pet peeves/annoyances? Well, mine would be pompous pageant girls and guys who wear their pants low to the point of waddling inconvenience

This project was to create a cereal box image, and mine was Cow Chow. Full of healthy, good-for-you fiber
These are the Watercolor paintings that I did for the front and back of the cereal box.

These few sketches are a little "George Shrinks" reminiscent. Some could definitely have been pushed more, but here they are.

I was going to do a series of these images of affection in a book idea that I call "The Book of Kisses" or "The Kissing Book." The execution is on hold for now.

Dinosaur dancing
And this was an ink project where we were supposed to illustrate our own version of a well-known children's book passage. I used "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein and the passage
"He would climb up her trunk and swing from her branches and eat apples. And they would play hide-and-go-seek. And when he was tired, he would sleep in her shade. And the boy loved the tree, very much. And the tree was happy."
